OVERVIEW

Dhampir is an 2-D action platformer that I have designed using Unreal Engine 4. I served as the Game Producer and Art Director of the project.

The game was scripted using UE4 Blueprints. All the art assets and spritework were created from scratch.  The UI, menu's, shaders/materials, controls scheme, combat systems and level design were designed and created by me.

The game consists of a just a small 1 level demo where the player battles various enemies while collecting powerups and avoiding hazards until their encounter with the stage boss.

Dhampir is inspired by the Anime, Vampire Hunter D (1985).

MY CONTRIBUTIONS

Production

Dhampir started off as a fan-game based of the animated movie, Vampire Hunter D. I decided to create the demo using Unreal Engine 4 because of its powerful visual scripting language using Blueprints and Paper 2D.

As the Producer of the game, after viewing the Anime I wanted to create a small but fun action 2-D game. I decided to design a Vertical Slice piece that would serve as the foundation for a much larger game if I desired to do so.

Design

I wanted the player to experience the feeling of playing a retro styled NES game. Even though the game is not a true 8-bit title, I thought it would be interesting for a game that looks like a retro title to take full advantage of Unreal Engine's 3-D graphics engine and abilities.

Art

As the sole Designer of the project, I decided to go for a retro style of art design that would be reminiscent to the art style of the 80s.

I created all the sprites from scratch as well as the UI/UX design.

Lastly, I wanted the art style and enemy types to be similar to the type of creatures and locales seen from the actual movie.

Sound

The sound consisted of the use of royalty free sound assets. For demo purposes the main theme of the game come straight from the movie's original movie score. I will be looking to covert those tracks to chiptunes in the future.
